Modification of Rodent Clicks

While still clinging to the rodent, certain keys can modify the functions offered that will be activated upon clicking a rodent key, if the software then attending to the rodent is prepared to notice.

SHIFT+right click

Shows a menu of alternative commands.

SHIFT+double click

Runs the alternate menu's default command (second item on its menu)

ALT+double click

Displays Properties.

SHIFT+DELETE

Deletes an item without placing it in the Recycle Bin.

General keyboard shortcuts

CTRL+A

Select all in the current window or the desktop.

SHIFT with any of the arrow keys

Select/unselect text, in that direction, or more than one item in a window or on the desktop.

SHIFT+PAGE UP

Select/unselect a page's worth, upwards.

SHIFT+PAGE DOWN

Select/unselect a page's worth, downwards.

CTRL+C

Copy the current selection to the clipboard. Careful! The V key is adjacent! Recover via CTRL-Z.

CTRL+X

Extract the current selection, copying to the clipboard.

CTRL+V

Paste from the clipboard at the insertion point, replacing whatever is selected.

CTRL+Z

Undo last action (not itself an undo), such as CTRL+V when CTRL+C was intended.

CTRL+Y

Redo the last action, usually (...) that just undone by CTRL+Z. You hope. Confused yet?

CTRL+B

May convert to Bold text.

CTRL+U

May convert to Underlined text.

CTRL+I

May convert to Italic text.

Redo the last action, in some programmes...

BACKSPACE

Delete one character to the left of the text cursor, or, view the folder one level up in My Computer or Windows Explorer.

DELETE

Delete one character to the right of the text cursor, or, delete the selected item.

SHIFT+DELETE

Delete the selected item; if a file, without moving it to the Recycle Bin.

CTRL while dragging an item

Copy the selected item.

CTRL+SHIFT while dragging an item

Create a shortcut to the selected item.

F2 key

Rename the selected item.

CTRL+right arrow

Move the text cursor to the beginning of the next word.

CTRL+left arrow

Move the text cursor to the beginning of the previous word.

CTRL+down arrow

Move the text cursor to the beginning of the next paragraph, or, move the document's viewingpoint down.

CTRL+up arrow

Move the text cursor to the beginning of the previous paragraph, or, move the document's viewingpoint up.

F3 key

Search for a file or a folder.

ALT+ENTER

View the properties for the selected item.

ALT+F4

Close the active item, or quit the active program.

Restrains the computer from attempting to play the CD-ROM just inserted.

Dialogue box keyboard shortcuts

If you press SHIFT+F8 in extended selection list boxes, you enable extended selection mode. In this mode, you can use an arrow key to move a cursor without changing the selection. You can press CTRL+SPACEBAR or SHIFT+SPACEBAR to adjust the selection. To cancel extended selection mode, press SHIFT+F8 again. Extended selection mode cancels itself when you move the focus to another control.

Move forward through the tabs.
